I came back from ENLi a couple of days ago, the keynote went better than I expected it seems I still have a little “show man” in me after all.
I’m happy, I have made quite a few new FLOSSY friends in Mexico.
One day before my speech I asked people what desktop they used to get an idea of KDE usage in Mexico, I was shocked to see that only 2% of people I asked actually use KDE and even worse 30% said they loved KDE but moved on to other alternatives.
So my goal was clear, I needed to get people exited about KDE again, the base theme of my speech was “Try KDE”. I wanted to show them how KDE 4 works, what it can offer them and how both men and woman can contribute. I even showed that the only other way we could get more contributors was to KProcreate and spawn new contributors.
A few minutes after I started my speech I asked the audience what they used. The results where about the same.
After receiving a standing ovation from the crowd during my introduction featuring the KDE 4 commercial Aaron shared with me ( thanks to everybody that helped make that great commercial ). I noticed I had their attention.
Once I was finished I was approached by half the room, they wanted to try KDE 4 and not only that! but many wanted to start contributing. :-)
I keep getting emails from people I met at the event telling me how great KDE 4 is and that they have seen the light once again.
All in all, I consider it a great success. :-D
