NewsGroup Blues

Uncategorized Add comments

More than 10 years ago… this was the last time I went into a newsgroup.

A couple of days ago I signed up for a paid news group service and I have rediscovered the great feeling of posting without having to remember what site I posted on, passwords, profiles, etc.

I was shocked to find that there are no groups for KDE ( besides the a few mailing lists ). I did find many well maintained groups for Debian, Mozilla projects, GNU projects and a few others.

Does anybody still use Usenet?

Forgive any spelling | grammar errors I might have left slip by, the perils of writing posts on a tiny edit box and not in Emacs.

unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, newsgroups have become less and less popular. Personally, I’ve never experienced using one and I don’t know anyone who uses them. Mailing lists, forums, and IRC baby!

Well, there is at least one group in use within the comp hirarchy: comp.windows.x.kde

And you can use the news-gateway of gmane, if you prefer to use a news client for the kde mailing lists, though in most cases you still have to subscribe those lists as non-subscribers are not allowed to post on most.

Yep, I did notice comp.windows.x.kde. I guess it’s the times… They are filling up with spam quite a bit.

“Well, there’s spam egg sausage and spam, that’s not got much spam in it.”

    Ahh better days ;)

gosh, it’s been a long time since I’ve touched usenet… actually, I think I might have lost my password entirely :/
I used to hang out in alt.games.creatures, way back when I first discovered the internet. after that community imploded and RL got busy, I kinda drifted away. that must’ve been at least 4 years ago.

Same here, I left it back in 1996 or 1997. To much flame wars going about thanks to the warez windows folk. I did noticed it has calmed down quite a bit now.

I do not know what usenet provider you are using, but if you are seeing lots of spam within comp.windows.x.kde then it is most likely one that ignores cancel messages. Knode currently shows me 61 messages for that group (the oldest one I still have is from July 29th), one of them is actually spam, the other 60 are more or less on-topic postings.

What really is filling up with spam these days are mailing lists where everyone can post (without subscribing first) :-(

    smog,

`comp.windows.x.kde` is pretty clean, I have about 998 messages dating back to 20/09/2006 ( on SuperNews ) and only a few spam messages, I meant Usenet newsgroups in general; Thanks to Google Groups they have been filling up with spam with great ease (specially GNU/Linux related groups ).

I have notices spam posts on some of our mailing-lists also, `kopete-devel` has been hit a couple of times ( if my memory holds ).

Interesting. Hypertext FIDOnet as an “amalgamated medium” may win in the end.

i used to use usenet a while back. its good for backwoods sort of stuff like discordianism and conspiracy theories, but that’s about it.

i am, however, subscribed on a lot of mailing lists. partly out of interest and partly to see if i can fill up my gmail account to capacity ;)
