I found a Feisty Fawn in my lawn!

I tested Kubuntu Feisty Fawn a few days ago; I am quite impresses with the way the Ubuntu project has evolved. It provides a great starting point for any GNU/Linux amateur.

Denise is a designer. Her progressive attitude convinced her to give GNU/Linux a go; already a Inkscape and Gimp pro converting would be a peace of cake.

I first tested out one of her computers and decided to kill off the windows xp machine, tested Kubuntu on it and to my surprise the wireless PCI card was working out of the box, so it was settled.

Feisty Release

After reviewing the required applications that she might still need to use to keep up with her fellow peers, we decided to use vmware in case of emergencies such as incompatible formats ( Adobe Illustrator, CorelDraw, etc )

A day long nightmare had begun; by messing around with the wireless I noticed that most of the GUI tools broke the system with little or no effort, the GUI package installer also made a nice little mess from a few simple installs, this was mistake number one. Then came vmware player as all defective non-free software it didn’t work, as you can guess I am against the use of non-free software but I am also against sleeping on the sofa, so I started asking around the IRC and forums.. to see if the Ubuntu community had a fix for this already, this was mistake number two. The Ubuntu and Kubuntu community is quite lacking; maybe there all on holiday or they don’t know the answer.. who knows.

I did a fresh installed, scrapped all the bloody GUI mumbo-jumbo and ‘apt-get’ everything by hand like back in my Debian days.

Now that everything is fully installed I will keep a close eye on my lady here and see what can be improved in Kubuntu and I assure you I will be submitting patches ASAP.
